Come study
the subjective
mind with us
The Subjectivity Lab is building its new home at Duke. We are recruiting at all levels: PhD students, postdocs, and undergraduates. We are also inviting visiting scholars from all disciplines who want to study conscious experience with philosophy, behavioral science, and neuroimaging in the same room.
PhD Students
We are recruiting for Fall 2027. Students who want to do empirical research can join through the Cognitive Neuroscience Admitting Program (CNAP) or through the Psychology & Neuroscience PhD program. If your focus is mostly in cognitive neuroscience (fMRI, EEG), then you should apply through CNAP. If your focus is mostly in behavioral science, then you should apply through Psychology & Neuroscience. If you are applying through CNAP, you can indicate in your letter that you want to be considered for P&N admission too. Students who want to do philosophical research can apply through the Philosophy PhD program. We are happy to support students who want to combine empirical and philosophical research in any of the programs. The positions are fully funded. GRE is not required.
It is our policy to not pre-interview candidates before applications are due. So we are encouraging students interested in working in our lab / department to consider submitting their applications to the program that suits their interests better.
Postdocs
We expect to hire one postdoc with expertise in behavioral work and interested in studying high-level vision science and mental imagery. Previous experience in these areas is preferred but not necessary. Proficiency in experimental design, data analysis and writing is required. Affinity for abstract thinking and theoretical work is highly valued as we are an interdisciplinary laboratory interested in philosophical thinking as much as we are in empirical work. We hope the application for this job will open around November/December. Come back again to look for a link and in the meanwhile you can send Jorge an email with your CV and a few sentences about your research interests (what you've done and why you want to work with us).
Undergraduates
Duke students from any major can join as research assistants, for independent study, or for a senior thesis. Students from other universities are welcome for summer research or remote projects. These positions are all on a volunteer basis. Serious time commitment is expected, and we are looking for students who are highly motivated to learn and contribute to our research. Please email us with your CV and a few sentences about your research interests.
Visiting Scholars
We host faculty, postdocs, and graduate students from both empirical and philosophical backgrounds, for stays from a few weeks to a full year. At the moment, we do not have funding for visiting scholars but we would love to host you if you have your own funding.
